Bose Tries to Shake up Auto Industry.

In a cleared-out parking lot at Bose Corp.'s headquarters, a test driver guides a Lexus at 25 mph toward what would appear to be an unfriendly introduction to a two-by-six lying on its side, ankle-high.

A childlike grin spreads across 76-year-old Amar Bose's face as the vehicle does something most can't: jump over the board, like a cat bounding over a fallen log.

The sedan's experimental, Bose-designed suspension, driven by four electromagnetic motors, had quickly pulled each wheel up, then down.

It's a stunt, triggered when the car passed over a reflective strip that activated a sensor linked to the suspension. But the feat hints at the more practical capabilities of a suspension system that is Amar Bose's answer to a longtime engineering challenge: giving a car good cornering capabilities without sacrificing a smooth ride.

He started tackling the challenge in secret in 1980, even as the privately held company he founded kept churning out the high-end speakers and stereo equipment that have made the Bose name famous among audiophiles.
Wow.

Wow.

i guess he means famous for being crap 😕

and that's pretty impressive

but it's activated by refelctive strips right?

how will they make this useful for regular driving where each bump isn't marked by a convienent reflector?

It won't be.

well, i figured that

i just wonder how they'll implement it...maybe some sort of sensor that keeps a constant measurement of how far the car is from the ground and actuates the suspension accordingly?

well some cars (i remember the infiniti m30 as an example) had a feature which would detect the road surface in front of it and adjust the suspension accordingly. of course it wasn't as great as it could be now with the technology advances made.

The real beauty about Bose's invention is in his power amplifier that is need to vary power REALLY quickly to the car's suspension. Its some cool ish.

Technology from the DARPA race.

"More Smoother" ?

I'd imagine the reflective strips will be replaced by a forward looking proximity sensor, similar to those on the back bumpers of minivans, except on the front bumper, and angled down, to let the suspension know what terrain is coming.

If we could just skip to this whole "Flying Car" thing, people, then we could leapfrog right over all this suspension/road crap.

Kiss the road goodbye. It's time to take to the air!!!

😉

I'll take my 27 miles per gallon on a bumpy road over whatever crazy gas guzzling mileage a flying car would get, thanks.

" No Highs, no Lows, must be BOSE!"

Watch for that saying to continue to apply. The suspension won't even do anything for little bumps nor big bumps. Just the bumps of a particular height. The ride will be horrible, except on a few occassions when it rides just dreamy, for a split second. 😉

I have been reading about this for several years now. Bose is trying to diversify. Think of them prehaps as the next Delphi?

I dont think it's activated y reflective strips. popular science had an article about it and how the car had 0 body roll at 35 or 45mph, taking corners when amar bose drove it on a normal road. it also wont take too much electricity. something like as much as an air conditioning system since ti will generate some power on the up motion. it uses a motor to move the shock up and down not fluid.

I swear to God that I too thought of a suspension like that yrs ago, but my idea uses laser to measure the undulation of the road. I just didnt have the money like Bose to actually do something with an idea.
