with any other brand and make it to work as original?

Some of you might wonder why I'm asking. The reason is the BOSE does something to the system that if the speakers, amplifier or the head unit goes bad, you need to replace it with the same brand or replace the whole system and rewire the car.

I did go to 3 different audiocar places and all of them told me the same (see above).

But I was wondering if some of you knew the workaround to this issue.

Thanks

From what i hear, you have to rewire the car.

AFAIK, Bose speakers are self amp'd. and run on 2ohm atleast it did on the Maximas and Pathfinders back in the day. Not too positive about the newer ones.

Just keep the bose setup. They're definitely better than a lot of the factory ones a lot of the car manufacturers give you.

Depending on the year, you can find replacements on ebay pretty cheap

Thanks Isekii for your reply. I agreed that the BOSE system sounds really good, I do have it in my car as well (ALTIMA 2003). The issue is my son's car (ALTIMA 2002), the previous owner replaced the back speakers with FOSGATE speakers and the system is not working as is suppose to. The dealer is asking for over $130.00 plus installation for just one speaker.

I had Bose in my Mazda3 and I ended up ripping them out and replacing with Pioneers. I wanted to keep the speakers but as you already know Bose has proprietary setup that makes it difficult.

When I bought my Maxima I made a choice to get the SE because I didn't want the Blose system. I don't know anyone who has one and hasn't had problems with it. Check out Maxima.org, it is well documented that Bose blows.

I have a Pioneer HU, sub/amp and upgraded speakers in my car and it sounds much better than stock and better than the bose crap too. It also has integrated Bluetooth so I can use it with my cell phone handsfree.

I may have missed something here but can you not just buy the proper equipment from the dealer and install it yourself? Or is it $130 for just one speaker?

Sounds like he's saying $130 + installation.

I got my 5X8's for less than $100 a pair, they were Clarion brand.

Most premium sound systems (I'll let you decide if Bose is considered premium) are proprietary because they were designed for that vehical and not just an afterthought. This makes them sound better than non-premium systems but still not as good as quality aftermaket. The stock Nakamichi system in mine had speakers that came in pods (it's own enclosure) and were 2 ohms. It had it's own amplifier in the trunk and also a 10" sub mounted free air on the rear deck.

I haven't seen any cars made after the year 2004 that had normal, rectangular looking HUs.

Example: http://www.caradisiac.com/media/images/le_mag/mag272/mazda-6-mps-12g.jpg

For the Mazda 6, there is a company that makes a replacement dash panel with the air vents, controls, etc. that allows an aftermarket HU. I think the dash is about $200-$300, not sure how it looks or anything like that.

[edit]Found it - it's $180 (link).

Unfortunately you just gotta see what the aftermarket decides to put out. Like my 04 Accord, I just took out the pocket below the integrated radio/console:

Looks much better in person IMO.

Whew, at least it's possible in the Accord
<-- Might be getting an 06 Accord

I wonder what it's like for the new (still unreleased) Altima

There is a $40 dash kit for my 2003 Maxima. It allows a single DIN head unit to be installed and gives you a pocket below the receiver that will fit about 3 CD cases. It blends in nicely with the dash IMO.
