Right now I am using Sennheiser Noise-Canceling Folding Headphones (PXC 250)

Curious on just how good these headphones are. I do a lot of flying in planes.

they are not that great when compared to Sennheiser or IEMs. But that is my opinion. My younger brother got a pair for free (gift) and he told me that that they were worth as much as he paid.

I've used Bose noise cancelling headphones before, and I did not think they were substantially superior to my Altec Lansing noise cancelling headphones that I paid $30 for.

However, I am not a stickler for sound quality.

Sound isolation technology is by far superior to noise cancellation technology. Also often a lot more compact, rugged and don't require batteries.

Bose = overrated. They have a good reputation because they have good marketing.

read this first (bose in general)

Basically, the money gets invested in the noise cancelling and not how the headphones actually sound. There are other options besides noise cancelling.

If you're willing to try non-noise cancelling, both in ear monitors (IEMs) and just plain old noise isolating headphones work well.

IEMs are the ear-bud type headphones that go slightly deeper into your ear but can block out noise by about 20 dB. This works very well and often better than noise cancelling. Good brands include Etymotic, Shure, and others.

There are also headphones that are worn around your ear like normal and don't have noise cancelling, but still do a good job of blocking the sound.

Finally there are noise cancelling headphones from other companies, like Sennheiser, that still sound good while cancelling noise.

For more information, go to head-fi.

Here are some threads I dug out:

Good luck, and remember the old saying:
"No highs, no lows
Must be Bose."

I had a chance to wear these (only for noise cancellation, not for music listening) and was very impressed.

I know that it's in vogue to bash Bose. But my personal experience was very impressive.

I do not have experience with other headphones to compare with. However, recent face-offs by various magazines have put the Bose at the top of the list.

I will admit that Bose does seem overpriced. Given their generous return policy, it may be worth checking out. If I had the cash I'd absolutely consider the product.
