cant believe someone said "cute" thier freakn cubes, i've seen much nicer lookn ones in my opinion. i'd much rather sit and listen to a few different sets in my house.
but what kind of small home theater sets do you guys think is the best for the price?

I personaly use a set of Logitch Z5500 for my hometheater. Small speakers can be placed anywhere and a 188 watt sub. Not to mention all of it is THX cert and all matching speakers.
For under $300 you can beat it in price or sound quality unless your talking $500 recievers and $1K speakers.

i agree with you here, I have these speakers too and they kick a$$.. i'm curious to see what yoyoyohowsdajello has to say about that since hes the soundman and all.

You can beat it for a lot less than $1500, but it's a good buy at $238 shipped from newegg right now. You're getting a lot for your money especially compared to most crappy HTIB sets out there.

You're joking right...?

::worried::

not $1500 worth of speakers.. but i think they are pretty kick ass for a small room.

If you notice the new edit, I gave an example of a system that doesn't cost much more but will give many times to performance in a HT setting:

Acoustimess bandpass systems are one of the worse ones I've listened to.

Crank up Pink Floyd's Breathe (the beginning) and the throbbing gets really flubbery sounding. Of course I'm quite spoiled with what I've been listening to but still...

But a very good investment, receiver is obviously a full blown(although nothing special) receiver, and the speakers are nice MTM's. Really good buy for someone that wants to use em for mostly HT and music use.

$430 for that is not bad at all!

The onkyo 780 set does go on sale for under $400 from time to time.

You've also got Klipsch Promedias and Creative/Cambridge Soundworks Gigaworks sets as alternatives to Logitech.

Go and listen to them first before you get set on anything.

There are other alternatives in this range too.

Cheap receiver = ~$170 (Pioneer 515 or something)
3 pairs of Polk R15s from outpost = ~$150
Dayton 12" sub = $120 shipped

I picked up this home theater system factory refurbished for $134 shipped from ShopOnkyo. Should work well in my bedroom.

The onyko HTS770 isn't anywhere near audiophile quality and quite frankly is horrible for music listening.

Those speakers are worth what they cost though.

that is doubtful. somehow i doubt most sound that much better than speakers costing several times less. a speaker 10x as costly probably isn't gonna sound 10x better. much of it is for looks anyways:p

TheGizmo, if you're interested in music I'd suggest just getting a decent receiver and then the best pair of bookshelf speakers you can afford initially.

Over time you can build up a whole system of good quality.

Bose = Buy Other Sound Equipment.
In all seriousness though, bose HT systems are pretty bad, as has been mentioned here before. They use cheap cones, bad drivers, and bad plastic enclosures that screw with the sound in a big way, how they are still selling stuff after this long is amazing to me, but i guess some people will always be suckers for marketing.

"Audiophiles" take this to the extreme though.

knobs for audiophiles anyone?
$3500 power cable etc.

Just seems like audio stuff sure takes diminishing returns to the limit.

Never underestimate the power of suggestion when perception is involved.
Ask SONY why the Beta (while better and smaller than it's rival's VHS product) had it's ass KICKED in the marketplace.
BOSE uses labyrinth technology for it's bass modules and in the WAVE radio.
Other brands of small satellite speakers sound good too.

Don't get wrapped up in brand names. Listen to the products, then decide. Don't worry, it's not like you're calculating missle trajectories, no one gets hurt if they don't sound "the best".
I once had a Sound Company provider proudly exclaim he had 12 BULLFROG (yes, it was a brand) Column speakers for our concert. It was then I understood that Point of View and Perception often collide, marketing wise. Thus the maxim : One man's trash is another man's treasure.

AKG D-1000 microphones are selling for more than when they were new, and they haven't improved (sound wise) to justify such an increase, it' just that they are "vintage" and available and thus the market goes.

Exactly! I cracked a window with my set in my house from the bass. In the kitchen to be exact. The room off from where the speakers are set up. I would really like to see a HT in a box do that!

I have owned a Klipsch set up fpr the compuer and the home. I have own countless sony set ups with a 500 watt sub I used for most of the set ups. I have had KLH, Pioneer, Panasonic, SONY, DCM, And MTX loud speakers and surrounds, and now onf what I have owned before has sounded as good as this cheap as hell Logitect set up. You can litterally go across my street and still hear the bass.
I would bet anything if someone came to my house and I covered it all up and played a fighting seen from Kung Foo Hustle, after you said it sounded great showed what you had been listning too. You would of pooped your pants :D
Granted I have never heard a multi thousand dollar set but I am talking about what A normal middle class person could afford. I am sure without a doubt the very high end stuff sounds great but then were talking apples and oranges :p

I didn't say it was audiophile quality...I said it would be a option that would beat the aforementioned computer speaker setup hands down withouit being that much more expensive.
