Soft-modded X, used exclusively for XBMC. Well I was renaming the .xbe file so it'd boot straight to XBMC and I must've made a file name error without noticing, because when I reboot I get an error screen and I can't get to any dash. As a result, I also can't FTP and fix the problem.

Since the BIOS has already been modified, is there a boot disk or something I can make to get back into the HD and fix the filename, or is it possible to pull out the HD and plug it into a PC and fix it that way?

I didn't mod it myself, had a friend do it, so I don't have the hardware necessary to boot to a USB key or anything. Thanks in advance for any help.

I do think if you can get into your xbox and get the hdd out you can install into a PC like a normal hdd and go from there. Not positive, but from what I've heard it's doable.

Well if he made a backup of the mod install and/or your original MS dash you might be able to recover it. There are a number of tools available in the download section over at xbox-scene.com .

I believe you can hook them up to a computer, but I can't remember for sure. I know I messed one up once (trying to use a different one I think it was), and I remember fiddling with quick swapping of an IDE cable with a computer for some reason (I can't remember why I was doing this... I had such a hard time doing it, so I think I shut it out of my mind to forget the agony it caused :p).

I believe you also need a program to read the XFS or whatever the XBOX's File System is called.

You may just be able to burn a dashboard to a DVD and boot the XBox off that... but I'm not sure since I've not used any softmods before.

I'll have to look around and see if this is possible since it'd be the easy way to fix this. If not, I'll try pulling the HD. Thanks for the input so far guys.

I doubt that'll work as you're probably getting one of the dreaded error codes. I can't remember the code numbers anymore, but for some reason '6' is popping up in my mind.

OH WAIT! Now I remember why I had to hook the XBOX's HDD up at a certain time! Unless you unlocked your HDD permanently, your HDD cannot be edited, because it's currently locked. However, during boot-up of the XBOX, the XBOX unlocks the drive while checking to see if it's locked (or something like that). The trick involved disconnecting the DVD drive if I remember correctly to cause another fault instead of the Dashboard corrupted error. But you had to remove the HDD cable at just the right time or the drive would lock again.

It was a real pain and took me hours alone, but it took about a minute once I had help.

For more information, check out xbox-scene.net.

download Auto installer deluxe iso

Then boot your X-box with it in the drive, if your are able to boot the disc you sould be able to re-install the dashboard from there. Kind of booting off a XP disk. The disc also has a lot of apps you can install if you like.

I am in the process of making XBMC my primary dash but i cant rename or delete the evox dash for some reason, it keeps on restoring itself. Did you have this problem?

good luck

Downloading Auto Install Deluxe now.

Nope, I had it booting to XBMC, then I updated it and was changing some things and now it wont boot. I'm assuming(hoping) it was a typo in the filename.

I second that. I deleted the evoxdash.xbe file with my modded Xbox and got hit with error code 21. Booted the AID disc and reinstalled UnleashX and everything is ok.

I'm getting error code 13, which is dashboard failed to launch. There a trick to booting from the CD, just goes straight to the error screen.

you can boot into a game, can't you? load up the mechwarrior or 007 or one of those discs, and boot into the hacked saved game, and reinstall the mod

After doing a bit of research I found this.

13 - kernel - Dashboard launch fail (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.

The error it gives is because of the incompatibility between the (older) dashboard (4920) that older slayer cd installs and the new dashboard/kernel versions found in some new xbox's and found in xbox's that have been connected to xbox live (when you go on xbox-live, it'll upgrade your dashboard file to i believe it is now 5659.03. This dasboard is incompatible with the dash that (old) slayer cd installs (for example 2.5 or lower) for you.

(In detail, in the eeprom chip there is a kernel which is incompatible with the dashboard (4920) that slayer installs.)

So what do you do to fix it? You can use the dashupdate found on most new xbox games! Be sure to 1st unplug your ethernet cable before you do so!!!

Besides that, just use a good installation disc and all is fine. Use a 2.6 slayer or something similar

Seems that booting a newer Live enabled game and having it update the dashboard should fix it.

Yeah, found that post last night. Going to give it a try tonight and see what happens.
