Boredom at Work = Arts & Crafts (Axim vs iPaq)

I'm in a program run by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. This program is an 8 month rotation for Civil Engineering graduates. We go through all the departments of DOTD (road design, bridge design, etc), learn about the engineer's role in the section, work on projects, etc. After it's finished, I will be placed permanently in a section of my choice.

Anyway, I am in the road design section, and they don't have anything that I can work on at this time. I've been spending the past 2 weeks surfing the net and listening to music. My boredom has peaked.

Lately, I've been looking to buy a PDA and am trying to decide whether to get the 400mhz Axim X5 or the iPaq h1910. I've held an iPaq, but have never seen an Axim. I decided that I would make replica PDAs. The engineers were staring at me as I was drawing out the dimensions and cutting and pasting my mock PDAs. I even drew on the buttons, logos, and screens. I've also have trimmed the edges to match the pictures i've seen.

I have determined that the Axim is a monster compared to the iPaq, but it may be tolerable. I'm leaning towards the Axim now. The residents of Louisiana would be proud to know how their tax dollars are being spent. :)

Anyone else have a job where they get this bored? My friends say that I should enjoy this play time, but my engineering mind wants to actually do some work....

Where do arts and crafts come in to play? You planning on doing some cross-stitching soon?

/edit and by the way, enjoy your play time. ;)

You should have printed them to scale on a color printer.

Crayons are for children.

I'm not going to risk using state resources on this. They'd probably have a fit....

Isn't there a way to be more pro-active in your position? Pick up some side projects for others that are a part of your department. Make yourself look good - and shoot for that next promotion rather than waiting on the work to come to you.

Every day I talk with the project manager in this section and I ask (almost beg) him for something to do. He said there isn't anything he has that I can do right now. This happens in several sections. One problem is that they cannot give us an in-depth project if we are in the section for 2 weeks. There are some sections where they have given me so much to do that I barely had time to eat lunch.

I've been showing the people around the office my 2 "PDAs." They all say the same thing: "I like the smaller one."

I'm so bored right now that I may start making a cradle for both of them....
