You will need a pencil, eraser, and paper. Use consistent approximation in place of a ruler.

1. Imagine a clock. Draw a 2" erasable line from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock (horizontal). This will be referred to as Line A
2. Draw a 2? erasable line from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock. This will be referred to as Line B.
3. Draw a 2? erasable line from 11 o'clock to 5 o'clock. This will be referred to as Line C.
4. Using the end points of Line A as a guide, draw a symmetrical oval 2? wide by 1? high. This will be referred to as Oval A.
5. Repeat Step 4 to create an Oval B using Line B, and an Oval C using Line C.
6. Erase the lines drawn in steps 1-3.
7. In the center of the ovals, draw a circle with a diameter half the height of Oval A (1/2?). This will be referred to as Circle 1.
8. Locate the right apex of Oval A. Locate the point halfway from that apex to Oval A's nearest intersection with Oval C. Draw a circle half the size of Circle 1 (diameter 1/4?) using the point you've located as its center. This will be referred to as Circle 2.
9. Locate the top right apex of Oval B. Draw a circle slightly smaller than Circle 2 using the apex as its center.
10. Locate the top left apex of Oval C. Follow the outline of Oval C down left until you locate the spot halfway between the nearest intersections of Oval A and Oval B. Using this location as a center, draw a circle half as big as Circle 2 (diameter 1/8?).
11. Shade the four circles as spheres.

Lemmie know what you end up with

Why didn't your directions just say "draw an atom"?

because that would be no fun

Do you write support documentation for a living?

no I am working towards that now, hence this pointless exercise

Man, what I'd give for support documentation that was clear and to the point... "Draw an atom."
