Borderlands offline (split screen) coop - can you jump in and out?

I haven't found a way to do it. But on Borderlands, offline split screen. Can I have my buddy log in with his profile and have me jump and in and out with different characters without have to save and quite and then restart? Maybe I'm missing it but I don't think it's possible.
