My RX580 is getting smoked playing Borderlands 3.

Playing at 1440p @ pretty high settings, the in-game FPS counter is showing about 40fps. My RX580 temps are shooting up to 87F and hover at 85/86F. I get a few screen flickers turning black for 2-5 seconds then turning back on. Do you guys think this is related to the overheating or is it the AMD driver issue? I'm using the latest AMD drivers 20.2.2...

The biggest performance drop in BL3 comes from volumetric fog believe it or not. Make sure you set it to medium, low or off. No idea why that particular setting is such a GPU hog.

Good tip. There was something similar in AC Origins and Odyssey with volumetric clouds IIRC. Almost unnoticeable visually, but epic GPU hit.

Have to say, the game is pretty heavy on the gpu for such mediocre graphics. I have a 1060 6gb and had to go to med/high settings to get 60 fps at 1080.
Next time I start the game, I will make sure to check the volumetric fog setting.

The new Crysis? Yeah i hate games that just pull more then they should. Half the time i won't buy them just on that principal. Forced upgrades in a sense if your a perfectionist like me on the fps. Games need to warrant their hardware requirements if i wanna play them. Like how the heck is GTA 4 so bad, i remember doing a handful of upgrades and i almost swear sometimes it ran worst...even if all the rest flew!

GTA4 is an abomination of a port, much like a lot of 7th gen console era ports.

Was dark days for PC gaming man. The golden era was mostly over, and Microsoft led an Exodus to Xbox (an Xodus? LOL), and shitcanned most of their PC gaming support entirely, or screwed it up with Games for Windows Live kind of clown shoes nonsense, and overall port quality with what we got cross platform was almost always terrible.

8th gen and x86 really saw a resurgence, though I'd argue it started slightly earlier. 7th gen consoles lasted so dang long that PC gaming just outrageously outstripped the capabilities of consoles, and more and more people came over. All kinds of esports stuff rose in prominence, and quality of ports rose immensely. I'd argue that since about 2014ish, we're in another PC gaming golden age. Relatively few multiplats miss PC, and relatively few ports are outright bad. Some are hungrier than they should be, but most games work fairly well to outstanding.

They even used to get basic controls wrong, lol. Like, ... How?

I went full on ham back in early 2010,i went from a Q6600 and gtx280 to a i7 940 and gtx295 and i saw a frame reduction in GTA 4. Talk about being pissed i was always under the impress every game supported sli and was my first time with it. Well at least BF2,Bioshock 1 and UT3 flew! I found out how powerful that gtx280 really was for BF2 when i got a like new never used gtx285 from a retro build last year. Insane overkill with the 7700k in benching but the Q6600 was a bottleneck back then LOL. I couldn't sustain 100 fps and since i had no OSD i figured it was a gpu issue LOL.

For 1080p my 7700k and 1080ti at 1080p is like the spiritual successor to the i7 940/gtx295. It MASSACRES eveything i currently play and its cpu bottlenecked in everything LOL. Its why i am willing to go to Comet Lake even if its a furnace as long as no need for water or else its 4000 series. Add in the freesync and some games like COD WW2 go from stuttering on a maxed out 7700k to smooth as silky with that fast sync enabled at 150fps. It's bliss.

I think 2020 is going to be like broly power level 9000 legendary dude. I am so hyped, like i said in another thread the best year in hardware perhaps since 2007.
