Border Patrol game?

They have this new flash game called Border Patrol out. Heres an excerpt from msnbc:

Links to a bloody new Flash videogame called Border Patrol, whose object is to kill as many illegal immigrants as possible, are making the rounds through e-mail forwards. The game, which comes at a time when U.S. leaders are working to revive a sweeping immigration bill in the Senate, encourages players to kill targets such as a "Mexican nationalist," "drug smuggler" and "breeder" (a pregnant woman with two small children) "at any cost." When a target is killed, blood splatters on the screen. "It's violent and unnecessarily hurtful," says Jack Thompson, a lobbyist against violence in videogames. "We should use public-nuisance laws to shut down this game because it poses a clear and present danger to an entire class of people. Illegal immigration is a real problem, but this game only coarsens that debate."

I have a link for it, but I don't know if the mods will ban me for putting it up. Personally I think its pretty offensive.

Topic Title: Border Patrol game?
Topic Summary: Offensive or free speech?

Most idiotic topic title ever.

It's like asking.

Topic Title: My Socks?
Topic Summary: On my feet or made of cotton?

the two are independent of each other, and whether you like it or not, they have the right to say it, period.

So what do u suggest I change it to? I have played the game and it could be construed as a threat.

...if you're a moron, sure.

So if there was a game like say about shooting Jews would you think it would be appropriate?

It would be offensive, yes. Would it be threatening? ...only if you're a moron. Video games aren't real life. I like to play on the Terrorist side when playing Counter Strike. OH NOES, SOMEBODY PUT ME ON THE FBI WATCH LIST QUICK!!

very poor taste, like "postal" or whatever that game is where you play a postal worker and go postal on everyone

but it should be allowed as much as any other game

How about:

Topic Summary: Can it be construed as incitement to violence?

ok

A quick search on google is all it takes.... plenty of places to get it. I didn't find it particularly clever or funny, and it's definitely in bad taste, but anyone who wants to play/watch it should be free to do so. I don't believe in censorship.....

THAT WAS THE BEST GAME EVAR!

Heres another view:

Pedro Rios, with the American Friends Services Committee, was outraged when he saw the game. "It tabulates how many people you can kill, how many Mexicans you can kill," said Rios. "It specifically dehumanizes (and) takes away (the) dignity of Mexicans, who are only coming to feed their families and look for better opportunities for themselves." Francisco Estrada, the Sacramento Director for a California civil rights organization whose focus is on statewide public policy, said that the game will only serve to inflame the debate over immigration in the United States. "It?s sad to see the demonstration and promotion of hate since what we?ve seen over the past couple of weeks is a more dignified rational approach," Estrada said.

Alright then. In response: I'd say it's going to be very hard to demonstrate that this is in fact, an attempt to incite violence against illegal Mexican immigrants, the bar is simply too high (not that I'm arguing it should be lowered, mind you -- there are too many important uses of speech) to reasonably ban it. Plus, it's in the wild on the internet, so the whole point is moot: there is no way it's ever coming down.

Is it legal, probably. Is it in extremely bad taste, yes.

As far as the legality, if it were used in a "training" context to indoctrinate people in a "camp" to hate/gun-for Mexicans, I imagine it could be considered an action contributing to a terrorist enterprise.

True, true.

The question is whether or not they can legally shut it down. Of course, in this day and age, I guess the legality of it doesn't really matter, now does it? 😛

are the targets in the game "illegal" or just "undocumented" ?

They're little animated guys. There are three types of "enemies" that you have to shoot and they go ROCKETING across the screen which has a backdrop of a desert with a river running down the middle (obviously the Rio). You have to be quick to get them and the longer you play the harder it gets, just like most flash FPS's out there today. At the end, it plays La Cucaracha in a sort of "neener neener missed me" sorta tune that's hilarious 😀
