Some headlines must make even the editor say, "WTF?"

An off-duty Border Patrol agent was holding a gender-reveal celebration for his wife’s pregnancy last year when he accidentally started a 47,000-acre wildfire, his attorney said.

<snip>

The wildfire began when Dickey shot a target that contained Tannerite, an explosive substance designed to detonate when shot by a high-velocity firearm, U.S. Forest Service Special Agent Brent Robinson wrote in an affidavit filed Sept. 20 in U.S. District Court. The explosion was caught on film by a witness.

Nearly 800 firefighters from various agencies battled the Sawmill Fire for about a week in April 2017, at a cost of about $8.2 million.
So who is paying for the difference? Unwilling taxpayers of that state, where that money could have been spent on something more worthwhile? o_O

Well at least he's agreed to pay back the $8 million.... Initial payment of $100 grand then monthly after that...

How in the F could a border agent pay that back?

It's $220k in total. He's paying $500 per month for 20 yrs to pay $120,000.

Ahhh I read a different article that didn't mention that part specifically. It just said he agreed to pay back the $8M but didn't specify the $500. This makes more sense!

Reminder next time. Read the link in the OP!

Why is it relevant that it was started by an off duty boarder patrol agent?
Border Patrol has well established history of trashing the public lands. They even got an exemption from most environmental laws so they could continue to trash you public lands with impunity.

What a ignorant statement. The guy was punished as a everyday Joe for a accident. Being a BPA has nothing to do with the inicident or sentence.

Look up hayman fire Colorado.

Maybe the attitude toward public lands he learned on the job carried over into his private life.

Do you have a link for that claim? I searched but could not find anything supporting it. I would have thought it would be the other way around where people coming in illegally would be negatively impacting the environment.
