I haven't seen anything before from Borat -- or Sasha Baron Cohen for that matter -- so I'm wondering - are these scripted situations, or are these real people taking him seriously?

They are all real people taking him seriously. That's the humor. He has balls the size of basketballs - I can't believe some of the things he does and says.
read the write up in Entertainment Weekly in regards to his (Borat on Cover)
it explains just how talented and impressive Sasha really is. And how committed.
Not to mention how uncomfortable some of the situations in the movie are supposed to make you feel as they are REAL answers. This movie is a full throttle comedy. However it is also a very serious statement on the state of American/world mentality (and stupidity).
