Tried to install a new pci video card and deleted my drivers for the onboard video & The AGP drivers for mobo.

Now I would like to just stay with the onboard video but I dont know how to get the video back.

I get two screens the bios & black XP pro then thats it, Green light stays on the moniter, I can hear the xp startup sound in the speakers, No bios beeps

Things I have tried: A different pci video card, All bios settings, Removed the batt, password jumper, I have no restore cd or driver cd.

Specs: Gateway desktop 400mhz sdram 256mb (kids computer)

This is the system in ? > http://support.gateway.com/support/allsysteminfo.asp

What would you do "HELP"

Can you see the screen that say's gives you a "VGA mode" setting when booting up in XP? if so select that, as it seems the drivers are definately missing in xp. That might get you into the OS with generic drivers, and you can try downloading the onboard drivers from the manufacturers website in that case.

Can you just put the "new pci video card" that you have back in for now? The drivers for it should still be there. After that, you can download the drivers for the onboard card.

Deleted drivers? You meant uninstall I hope. Can you can boot in safe mode? At the very least, WinXP has basic drivers to run video.

Another idea:

If you can get the black XP loading screen, then you should be able to get into safe mode. So start safe mode, and then try to get Windows to detect the onboard video card and install some generic driver for it.

Yes I uninstalled them.

Safe mode might be working but I cant get any driver to install so that I can see the screen

Try this:

Go into safe mode and uninstall *all* video drivers. Then reboot and Windows should use start using the same drivers that it uses in safe mode. The screen may be using low resolution/few colors but at least it should be working. You will then be able to connect to the Net and download the correct drivers from the manufacturor.

i hate these kinda problems.

one thing that makes this hard for me to understand too is that A friend put xp on this system
and all the drivers from gateway are for win9x

No prompt? Are you sure you are doing it right? Restart your computer and start pressing F8. When the menu finally comes up, it should look like this:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
etc.

You want to choose the one that says "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

If that works, then we have a shot at fixing the problem.

Strange, never heard of this before. Why don't you just do like I suggested in my first post:

Can you just put the "new pci video card" that you have back in for now? The drivers for it should still be there. After that, you can download the drivers for the onboard card.

Someone told me to try a different pci video card too.

I thougt maybe because the first pci video card was ATI that there was A conflicting so I got A new pci video card other then ATI.

All I ever got was the same screen issue from both ways PCI OR from the onboard Port it didnt make A difference.

When I first put the PCI card in did not work only the onboard worked.

I tryed to uninstall/disable the onboard video losing the drivers for both motherboard & the ATI 3d rage chip drivers.

Then I tried the PCI card the os never came up so I gave up with the PCI card.

I have been trying to undo what I did.

My gut tells me it happend when I removed some vga driver.

I uninstalled the drivers for the 3d rage pro

then I when went to far and saw some hardware/drivers for some default vga stuff thats when everything went too poo.

If you can see the XP boot up screen you should be able to get into safe mode. I just had this same problem this week. Once into save mode you need to go into the device manager>display adapters>highlight your card then right click and unistall. Then reboot and reinstall new drivers.

you are not the only person that has said that if I can see the Xp screen then I should be able to get into safe mode but for some reason I cant get there.

I dont know what the link is for it go's to a login page thanks

So F8 does what for you? It would bring me to the boot order if I did it too soon. Too late and I was watching the XP screen....
