Greetings all,

I was browsing the web just now and my computer suddenly BSOD'ed. Upon reboot, it got stuck on the SATA device posting screen and a couple of minutes later, displayed "Boot MGR not found". The computer then tries to reboot but gets stuck at the same point.

The hard drive indicator light is constantly on at the AHCI screen. I have not noticed any disk-scratching noises or any other indication that the HDD was in peril. I am running the following:

Vista x64
E8400
GA-P35-DS3L
4GB DDR2
7200.11 500GB
8800GTS 512

I am not OC'ed and generally keep resource-use to a minimum. What is my best course of action? Attempt a repair using the Vista installation disc? Please advise.

Update: When attempt to use the Vista installation disc, it doesn't detect any OS installed. What gives?

Do you have an another system around to test the hard drive with? It's rather hard to isolate the hard drive as the culprit without something to check it against.

Yes. I just tested both of my HDDs in an external cage. One is dead, one is good. The dead one happened to be my main HDD. Murphy's Law is a b****. I'm pretty pissed at myself for not having backed up my files. Wow.

Is there anything I can to to attempt to recover the files from the dead HDD? It doesn't even show up in My Computer when I boot it up in the external cage.

Edit: The weird thing is that there were no signs of impending doom. The drive still spins up but doesn't register anywhere at all.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give them a call to see what they say.
