Booting Windows 7 from a USB drive?

Is this feasible at all? I'm trying to create an energy efficient HTPC and wanted to install Windows 7 on a USB drive and throw in a few apps which should fit on a 32gb drive..or maybe a 16gb drive? What would the downsides be?

If possible, how would I go about installing Windows 7 onto the drive?

Edit: Looks like the requirements for XP is only 1gb, whereas W7 "requires" 20gb. I'll probably go the former route.

Why would you actively choose to go with obsolete software? I've created PE disks that boot from USB in the past for rescue, but never a full blown Windows install.

Or another option is to use Linux which is smaller and free and easily boots from just about anything you can imagine.

I have seen a version on the web thats 1.2GB as a VHD thats "preactivated"
I'm tempted to download it just see if it actually works
