Booting programs off external harddrive

Is it possible to boot programs from an external harddrive onto multiple computers? (not at the same time, of course). I would assume it would be; all I would need to do is install it from computer A onto the harddrive, hook the harddrive up to computer B, and install it again to the same location via computer B (to get the appropriate registry entries on computer B). Are there any problems that could arise from this? Thanks.
