Booting problems

Ok, building a computer for my grandparents, didn't do anything amazing because all they do is check email and play solitare. Anyways, I've never really dealt with slot CPU's, but I have a Slot P3 CPU, they only go in one way right?

Ok, so here's my prob...

It will post, the CPU fan will NOT spin, I don't have power in either of my CD Drives but I do have power in my MB and floppy. It doesn't dectect my HD or CD drives in the BIOS but only my floppy drive.

Now, I was thinking PSU, It's a Max Power 300W PSU, 12A on the 12v rails. Figured it should power up an older Apen slot board, a floppy, HD and 2 CD Drives. So then I thought Motherboard, but if I'm entering the BIOS then it can't be. So now I'm thinking it's the CPU because the fan isn't spinning on the heatsink. Yes the cpu fan is plugged into the boards. But then it just can't be the CPU because I'm not getting power to my CD drives.

Any ideas?

The edge connector has two layers of contacts and sometimes I didn't get mine seated all the way down in the slot. Did you goof around with it enough to rule out that possibility? Could be the fan header on the mobo's dead, in which case you could power it from a 3-pin-to-4-pin converter, I suppose.

Otherwise, maybe peel it out of the case and lay it on cardboard to eliminate the case as a cause of short-circuits. Good luck and remember FS/T is your friend if you need a different mobo for cheap

Would that make it so I couldn't get power to the Drives?

might be that there is a dodgy earth, or 5v. get a digital, multi-tester [pick them up for about £5/$8]

Ok so right now there's a cpu fan prob because it won't spin.
Power problem then maybe as well?

And BIOS not dectecting any of the drives except floppy..?

Can you try a different PSU or are the parts all over at their place ATM?
