Booting off an external drive?

Is is possible to boot off an external drive, such as a USB 2.0 or Firewire drive? My initial thoughts are that specific drivers must be loaded before the external drive is accessible, thus the answer is probably 'no'. Am I mistaken?

lots of newer motherboards have support... my epox 8kha+ has options in bios for usb floppy, cdrom, zip, and hard drives
