Booting linux off an iPod

so a buddy wanted to get into linux, and he wanted to try booting off his 4g iPod. I told him he should probably try using a live distro, but I don't really know how to go about partitioning the iPod to copy linux on and still have the iPod work, and be bootable. tips?
