Booting issues with two SATA drives

Recently I had a laptop 250GB hard drive give me the click of death and crash; I decided to try to recover the files by connecting the hard drive to my desktop. However, whenever I boot up my desktop it freezes post-Vista splash screen - as soon as I take the corrupted drive out, it works fine.

I thought all I had to do was enter BIOS and make the desktop HDD the top priority for booting, but it still freezes at the splash screen. What can I do to have the computer only boot the working hard drive and still attempt to access my files in the crashed hard drive?

Put the crashed 2.5 HDD in an external USB case and hot plug it after your main system is booted and Windows loaded.

Sounds like the drive is gone. But, an external 2.5" case is always good to have around. Or, you can get the Vantec dock wich will accept either 2.5 or 3.5 SATA drives.

BTW - is your sick drive PATA or SATA?

Thanks for the response - a move to an external enclosure was going to be my next step. The sick drive is SATA, a 250GB laptop one.

OK - SATA is good. That makes the Vantec dock a useful tool for any size SATA drive w/o messing with screws and case openings/closings.
