Booting into c:\windows\system32

I am running XP SP2, made no changes to the computer by installing or uninstalling anything but when I turn the computer on, when it gets to the desktop, the folder c:\windows\system32 opens up. Any suggestions or info?

Do you really think this is a hardware issue?
