booting from external HDD

I have a WD16 160GB HDD. I wanted to install linux OS on it. I was wondering if I could boot up my laptop through the external hardisk.

Look in the BIOS to see if you can boot from USB device. I you can, you are all set.

If the "Boot from USB Device" function isn't currently present, it could be with a BIOS update. But if your laptop isn't at least USB 2.0 native, I wouldn't hold my breath.
