Booting from ATAPI CD-ROM: ...... Help

Hi all...

I did some case mods, and when I rebooted I have this error.

1. I re-imaged using Ghost.
2. Re-installed W2k.
3. re-flashed Bios

And I still cant boot without the W2K CD in the CD drive. (It just checks to see that its there ...)
Then boots.

I even removed the CD as a boot device in BIOS.

Did my new HD die?

HELP! ... im ready to barbaque the stupid thing....

Still ....

DID my HD boot sector die or something?

The message indicates that BIOS is booting from the CD, despite your BIOS boot setting. Things to try: clear BIOS with MB jumper (power supply unplugged), reflash BIOS.

I did both ...

I begining to think I fried some chip values on the MB...

....

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Try swapping IDE channels. Observe what bios is telling dos upon boot up. Look in bios and see if it is detecting your hardware (cdrom, hdd).
Another option is to boot up with insert key pressed. (I was told this also clears cmos, but have not tried that yet to revise a mobo that won't post).

Also try removing everything else (hardware), and move your memory to another slot (if possible). Set you chip to its standard voltage.

For a few bucks you can replace your bios chip, but I don't know if that is a solution.

I have a similar problem...

I installed WinXP (but this happened with 2000 as well), and now no matter what I set the bios boot order to the machine won't boot unless I have the install disk in the cd-rom. In fact, it won't boot unless set to boot off of the cdrom...

I've cleared cmos a few times...doesn't help.

It is not a problem (currently)...more of an annoyance. On the other hand, I've had to make a few copies of the install disk since if it dies I am screwed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you guys looked in your boot..ini files to see what the boot sequence is? Maybe something's been changed there?

Here's mine, stock XP, no dual/multi boot:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Looks just like yours ...

Sorry I havent gotten back...

I just dont have the gutts to swap the IDE's yet....

I'll post results when I do ....

Thanks for responding ... these forums are the best ...
