I just put together a new AMD 1.2 GHZ 266 BUS(retail with HS/F) computer with the EPOX EP-8K7A MotherBoard. The case is the Enlight 7237 with a 300watt PS (it came with the case)

So I booted it up. Right away I noticed something. The fan on the processor was stuttering. It moves just a little....stops....then moves a little about a second later.....stops.....and does it over and over again. I have no idea what could be causing this. The 2 case fans and Northbridge fan startup nicely. I put a big box fan next to the case so I could get in the BIOS and see if I could find anything there. No luck, it just said that the CPU fan was going at 0 RPMS. I hooked it up to another fan header....same thing. So I now turn to you. Please give me any help if you can. This is the Fan/HS combo that comes with the retail AMD processor. Thanks in advance.

most likely your fan is bad. dont run the processor or you may burn up your cpu. kind of lousy that it came that way but a new hs/fan like a volcano 2 is ~$13 at newegg.com. you'd probably spend more on a rma shipment.
good luck

The fan should be removable from the Heat Sink without having to remove the HS from the board. Is it a CoolerMaster ? If you can find a 60MM fan at a place like Radio Shack for a few $s, go 4 it. Just make sure the puter is unplugged while you are doing this.

Could also be a voltage to the board issue or a defective fan header on the board. Have you tried unplugging the Northbrige fan. Also do you have the case fans running of the board or do you have them plugged in directly into the power supply ? Nonadequate power supply could be the problem also.

I've tried all the fan headers - no luck.
Only the CPU and NorthBridge fan are connected to the MB. The others are hooked directly to the PS.
The PS is AMD Recommended. If there wasn't enough juice, I"m sure all the fans would be affected, not just one.

Try swapping out your cpu fan with another one. If the problem still exists then most likely its a bad fan header on the board.

UPDATE: I fixed it. I was looking at the fan and noticed that the actually rotating part was not in the middle exactly. I pushed down on it and I heard a *snap*. Now it works like a charm. Thanks for all the help anyways!!

Sounds like the fan. Turn it on and tap it with your finger to see if it starts. If it doesn't then twirl it and see if the fan makes noise or spins lopsided.

If that looks ok then get another fan. That's pretty much your answer to that. AMD will replace your fan for free, and free shipping, just go to www.amd.com and look under support/services.

I don't think it's the header because you said it did the same thing on all the fan headers and it would be unusual for all of the fan headers to go out simultaneously. That leaves the CPU fan itself. Several people have suggested replacing the fan to attampt to solve the problem. The other option is to try a whole new HSF and see if that helps. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I already got the fix, but I appreciate your technical help. Both of you were right there.
