Bootable USB2.0/Firewire external HD?

Is it possible to have an external USB2.0 or Firewire enclosure that houses a harddrive that will act as a boot device? The scenario is this. I have (or will have in a week) an HP NC8000 laptop from work that I really want to use at home to play games. But I don't want to install crap on it and get fired. Hence the external hd thing...
 
I believe the BIOS would have to support it, letting you choose the boot sequence to external drive.
