hello all, i bought a laptop and have installed everything on it just the way I like it... but now the dvd-drive is broken (can still make burns, just the faceplate is broken) and I am still within the return period at staples, so I'm looking for the easiest way to backup my entire drive to DVD so that when I exchange the laptop, i can bring it home and just pop the dvd I burned in and let it put all the programs i have already configured back on in one step, if its bootable it would be even better. any suggestions? Thanks

edit: i would like it to install the os back along with it too ( i installed xp pro, the laptop came with home edition )

Symantec Ghost, though if you don't know what you're doing it would probably be to dificult to figure out.

Hum...

Power Quest used to make some products but haven't used them in a few years.

Not sure.

If they're just replacing the DVD drive why do you think the hard drive will be wiped? They're not going to do more work than is necessary.

Just back up your data and send it off. The 11 times I had Best Buy repair my laptops they never touched my hard drive.

Well after doing a little searching it looks like True Image does what you're looking for and from a few reviews I read seems to work well.

I did tech support for Compaq laptop and they almost always did a "quick restore" on a system that came in for any repairs.

Better to be safe than sorry.

there is a very small chance they will wipe your HD for the fun of it, but I would also assume the do a bunch of things that make no sense at all.

Not necessarily - my friend just sent in his HP to BB to have a key replaced on the keyboard - they sent it to an HP repair center, who promptly erased the drive. BB and Geek Squad said it was in the fine print, but didn't mention it....caused a big ruckus. Anyhow, better safe than sorry....

Also, I see this is late, but another vote for Acronis....
