Boot-up times using UEFI

I'm not really interested in the fancy GUI setup (actually prefer the text-based UI anyhow), but what advantages does UEFI have from a practical point-of-view?

Might have misread an article a few months ago, it stated UEFI (BIOS replacement) is supposed to have instant boot times onto the OS, however this isn't totally accurate after reading some posts from users that have installed this setup.

Where are we at... does it have scope for instant boot? what is stopping its progress? or is it not going to happen in the foreseeable future?

Theoretically, UEFI could provide for very fast boots if implemented in a certain way. Practically, the current implementations are about the same speed as a traditional BIOS or even a little slower.

Practical limitations of instant boot are:
- Need to detect changed hardware
- Need to perform a basic memory check
- Need to allow for user interaction (e.g. press Del to enter setup)
