Trying to help out a friend . When he tries to boot up his computer it says "Windows protection error" and "you must restart your system "

I can boot it up in safe mode . What can I do ?

which OS?
what had he done?

probably just some driver gone bad
it'll take forever to find the rogue driver, so if possible, I recommend a format and reinstall
u could do a complete wipe of the master boot record (first sector on the drive) or the entire drive if u wanted (aka low-level format) with a diagnostic utility that can be downloaded from the drive manufacture's site

Do you have a windows boot diskette?

If so, put this in a boot from this, when you are in dos. type A:/
it will change drive to A and then type fdisk.exe

follow on screen instructions to wipe hard drive and set up a windows partition onto which you can install windows.
