boot up problem

My friend was installing a program for his digital camera and it said he needed to reboot after so he did. then while rebooting an error popped up not sure what it said because i wasn't there. but he reset his computer now his computer will turn on and the logo screen will come on but then just stay at a black screen. not to sure what the problem is maybe his registry got messed up? if anyone could throw some ideas on how i should go about trying to recover his data and getting his computer up and running would be helpful thanks.

Could just be a refresh rate problem. Try booting into safe mode. Or, if it is xp, try using the system restore feature.

Try unplugging the camera because it could be failing as it tries to load the USB drivers. (That is, if it is a USB DC)
