Apologies, in advance, for the improper terminologies to follow.... ;)

Starting yesterday (out of the blue) when I power up my machine, it will get to the screen that is black and says something about Windows XP Home with a logo and a green "progress bar" below, and that's as far as it gets. It sits there, with the little green bar never stopping, and never goes on to Windows. The hard drive light on the case stays constantly lit.

After a few minutes, I do a hard re-boot and up comes a screen yelling at me for not properly shutting down and asking about safe mode, etc.

Yesterday, after doing this several times, and choosing several different options from the screen that yells at me, it eventually booted to windows. I logged on, did a windows update, and had to restart.....same problem again.

After seveal more re-boots, it went to windows again.

Choosing safe mode has worked both times that I have tried it.

FYI -- The last time I used my puter (a couple of weeks ago -- honeymoon) the CD burner wouldn't work...wouldn't even open. Don't know if that's important or not, so I'll include it.

I hope this is enough info for some of you gurus to get me straightened out. Thanks.

I'd try taking out the CD drive and see if it'll let you boot the computer then. I had a cd drive die on me recently and if the thing was hooked up, the computer wouldn't boot at all.

I unhooked the power cable to the drive and booted up fine.

I'm sure this means the drive is shot, but I guess I will try to reinstall.

Kinda ticked off since I only burned like 3 CDs with it.

Thanks for the help!!!

NP. Since it sounds like it's a new drive, you may want to see about RMA'ing it (you'll have to contact the place that you bought it from).
