Im trying to fix a laptop that has its registry corrupt in win98, and ' may have developed some bad sectors'. Does anyone know where I can get a bootup disk that will allow me to low level format the disk and/or do the scan for bad sectors.

Im planning on wiping the drive and starting over with winxp. Its a compaq presario fyi.

Here are three sources for bootdisks:
StartDisk - home of the "Ultimate Boot Disk"
BootDisk
Bart's ModBoot - home of ModBoot and SCSI Tool. This site has a lot of neat tools so the techie might become obsessed with playing with them and creating all sorts of boot disks, etc. - Be Warned a techie can get mired on this site for a very long time!

If there is not already a copy of some sort of scandisk program on the disk that you DL, just copy SCANDISK.EXE to it from the \WINDOWS\COMMAND\ directory of Win98/SE/Me.

This has been covered a zillion times already, but unless you have some wacky RLL/MFM type drive from the 70's/80's you're not going to be able to "low level format" your hard drive
