Boot up and Windows Problem

I am having problems booting up and installing windows on this new PC we put together. It seems to boot up fine, no smokes at least. But then here's where I get stuck:

Problem 1:
-using Win95 bootdisk (the only one I have), seems to boot ok, most of the time. Sometimes it hangs up (freezes after showing a couple of lines of text).

Problem 2:
-during some of my successful boot attempts, I can really see the A: prompt. I was able to successfully format the harddrive. But when I reboot, to install Windows, it hangs up looking for Hitachi CD-ROM driver (I don't have Hitachi CD-ROM; it also shows on the BIOS that it recognizes my Memorex CD-RW, which is the one I am using).

Question:
At what point can I install Win2000?

I will appreciate any information.

From a forever rookie...

Why not download a Win98 Boot disk that will come with "generic" CDROM drivers. That should take care of at least part of your trouble. You would have to give more info as the the specs of your system, (including Power Supply) in order for anyone to provide more of an "educated guess" as to other problems.

Or not...I guess I spoke too soon! It did solve half of my problem in that I am able to boot up and get to the Scandisk part.

Still have the following problems:
1) when I start Windows installation (trying Win98 or Win2000), it hangs there, won't copy files.

2) sometimes it hangs even immediately after a reboot.

3) there have been occasional reboots on its own, too!

My newly put together system (the best I can describe it) has:
Shuttle AK31A MB
Seagate 60GB HD 5400 RPM ATA100
AMD Athlon Processor 2000+
PNY 256MB DDR
Another 128 MB DDR
ATI Radeon 7000 Graphics Card
ATX 350-12V Power Supply.
CD-RW
DVD (not hooked up now)
Floppy

Thanks in advance for the help!

I would try booting and installing with just 1 DIMM installed.
Try either one and try different slots.

Let us know if this works.

That worked..almost 🙂 I was able to load windows. Thanks for the tip. But now when I boot up, it says Windows Protection Error, and asks me to re-start. If I restart, it just cycles to the same (windows protection error, re-start).

Tried this, but still the same problem (Windows Protection Error). I consulted Microsoft site and they suggested a few things. Will try one thing at a time. But if you think of any other potential cause and easy fix, please share! Thanks!
