boot time as from Windows loads or from BIOS procedures to Windows start up?

generally speaking, if you have a generic Celeron CPU at 2.4 GHz it will be terribly slow no matter what. I don't even know why the frequency was even set that high, it's a scam. anyway, power saving modes in BIOS can seriously downclock the GHz to MHz - I hate it, and it's terribly slow. Flash your BIOS or check your hardware configuration/software environment.

if you have 75 programs starting @ startup, it would take longer than if you had 20. also, do you ever defrag your hdd? how current is your a/v? maybe you have a virus, there are so many variables, i am just trying to cut them down.

So it's the OS. It has less to do with the BIOS settings then. I'd say, boot into safe mode, and see if that works just fine. And if it does, you'll know there is a problem with the real WinXP full fledged settings. It could be a virus or a bug/slow down that was triggered through installing software or new hardware.
You may have to repair the installation of Windows. Back up first.

you guys are spoiled from using winxp for so long. my machine boots win2k in that time, and thats actually pretty fast. but it only takes xp like 20-30 seconds.

you could try bootvis. or go on google and type "make widows xp boot faster" there are a lot of hits. there are probably some registry keys that wil help.

i have 2 machines that run 2k and they both boot faster than my xp machine (although it has scsi, so there is a long time for the controller to look for hdds). even if i was to take out the scsi stuff, the boot times are all prety close.
