Boot time defrag?

Running W2K Pro, SP2. I have a WD Caviar 40G hard drive. I use the MS defrag program that comes with the OS, and all seems fine. But, I'm wondering about a boot time defrag. Exactly what is this? And, how is one done? Do I need a third party defrag program for this? Thank you.

The Defrag program that ships with Windows 2000 and Windows XP is effectively Execsoft's Diskeeper Lite. The full version offers Boot Time defrag, which allows directory consolidation at the beginning of the partition and defrag of the MFT.

Hello, Andy. In your opinion, is a boot time defrag a necessary or, at least, a beneficial process to the overall performance of my home system? If I understand you correctly, the W2K defrag program does not defrag the MFT and does not do a boot time defrag.

The Win2K/WinXP defrag program cannot perform a boot time defrag.

The tasks performed by a boot time defrag is not essential to the well-being of your system, but people who are extremely pedantic about performance should consider upgrading to the full Diskeeper.
