Boot slow after installing XP

I just installed Windows XP and it seems to have really slowed down the boot. The problem is, when it's on the initial black screen, just after displaying the configuration table and the "PCI Device listing", it seems to just hang without any activity for quite a while before launching into XP.

I've checked the boot sequence and it hasn't changed: Floppy then HDD - but this shouldn't affect it to such an extent.

Configuration:

AMD Athlon T-bird: 1.33Ghz
256 MB RAM
ASUS Motherboard

I previously had Win2K on this machine and it worked perfectly so I know it's not the PC. I also know that it has nothing to do with resources 'cos I also have XP running on a Duron 850 Mhz with 128MB RAM and it boots much quicker.

I'd really appreciate hearing any ideas.

Thanks!
