Boot sector bad or bad HDD?

Had a 500GB SATA as the main in an XP 32bit rig, AVG popped up with boot sector errors or something and the PC restarted. HDD no longer detects, I tried a new cable and new port, nothing. Got an old ~100GB IDE in there now and can't see the 500GB in Windows either.

Is there any way to repair the drive? Is this what happens when a boot sector fails, or is it something else?

Yes they do.sometime they give you sign.but in your case it just died.

Is the volume visible in Disk Management(Windows)?

If it doesn't detect in the BIOS like it used to, it's likely dead. Does it still spin up?
