anyone know why every time i boot up, the screen where it tells you the bios version and mother board version is so blown up? i thought it was the resolution on my desktop, which i dropped from 1152x864 to 800x600. and i also tried swapping the video cards, from my voodoo3 2000 to a #9 video card and it had the same problem.
could it be my samsung syncmaster 700NF monitor?

It's large because the video drivers haven't been loaded at that point. You are stuck with 800x600 until then.

It's probably the refresh rate on your monitor... until you get into Windows it's probably set at 60hz. If your monitor is like mine, it "saves" settings for each refresh rate, so you can specify different settings for each one.

I have a feeling that since you were running it at 1152x864, you used the adjustments on the monitor itself to increase the 'desktop area' on your monitor effectivly increasing the length of the scans of the monitor. Hence, when the pc boots, the monitor still thinks that you want the information spread over that large area. Simply use the monitor controls to resize things and you should be ok.

guys the resolution you get on bootup CANNOT be changed by you.. there isn't any reason for the people who create these screens to have it changed either..

why doesn't changing windows resolution effect the BIOS resolution? becuase windows isn't even loaded yet!

Windows has no effect on the boot up screen until AFTER the computer finishes posting and reporting all the devices it sees, which is when windows starts loading..

How the hell can there be 6 posts about this. Like the last poster said, YOU CANNOT CHANGE BOOT RESOLUTION! When have you ever seen a bootup that was crisp and sharp like in Windows?

The resolution on bootup cannot be changed, but the positioning sure can. Adjusting the settings on the monitor itself, is going to effect the display, no matter what it is displaying. :)

<EDIT>
Wanted to clarify the refresh thing. What I am talking about there is when you change the refresh rate in Windows, say the refresh is bumped way up, the screen is 'shrunk'. This does NOT happen on all monitors, however it dows on many monitors, then the user changes the settings on the monitor to compensate, NOT in Windows. ;)

Use the little knobs & buttons on your monitor & position it correctly. Once you have done this it will look ok.

If it goes by to fast just press PAUSE on you keyboard & adjust it,the next time you boot your monitor will remember the position & will setup the monitor just like you told it to.

Your monitor should remember screen size settings indepently for each resolution, so you can change it on your monitor without screwing the size of the screen in windows. As for resolution, forget it. Why would you want to ghange it anyways, you only see it for a few seconds...

Unless you've got a mighty old monitor it should remember different size/positioning per refresh rate or at least similar scan frequencies. Some monitors have room for more/less remembered settings.

The boot up display if you have an older bios will be the same as resolution as DOS mode.

Simply go into real DOS mode, run something like edit.com(fills the screen pretty well with a solid color, adjust the size/position as desired.

The bios post screen will assume that positioning.

If you have a newer bios (ex: Award 6.00PG) the resolution will be 640x480x60hz.

Attempt to set your desktop to that resolution and refresh rate.

Adjust the size/position as desired.

The bios post screen will assume that positioning.

when i first boot up my computer. what i see first is my video card name and then the screen jumps to the bios screen, and finally the window98 screen logo. both displaying my video card and win98 logo is fine, but i just dont know why the boot bios window is so large.

i tried changing the refresh rate on windows from optical to 75Mz, but no luck and then 95Hz and still no luck.

When you get to the boot bios to where you say it's too large,Quickly press PAUSE on your keyboard.

Now adjust the setting so that it looks fine to you, then just press any key to resume the boot-up.

Next time you reboot it should remember the setting & look fine.

Fondoo... it's the way it is. You can't change the resolution in boot up. To change your resolution, windows have to load up first, then load the video card drivers.

BTW - Remember the pics are blurry, not the monitor.

BTW 2 - It looks normal to me. Looks exactly like my system.

Why do you care about your 10 second bios screen having a lower resolution? This is rediculous.
