Boot Rom Error

I am getting a boot rom error on a Gigabyte 5SMM mobo. Is there anyway to replace the chip that is causing this?

Any info is apprecaited!

Sorry bout that, rite when i turn the computer on, it says "boot rom error" no mem count or anything, just that error in the most upper left corner of the screen.

the bios is damaged probably. go to the mobo site, and d/l the most updated bios and "try" to flash the mobo bios again.

If that doesn't work, it's time to RMA... no way to fix that. I don't think you can replace the chip yourself.

Ok, you're going to have to open the case with the Power OFF for this exercise:

Look at your motherboard. There's a set of 3 pins (with a black or white plastic jumper over two of them) labeled "JP7". It's between the round silver battery and the connectors where your hard drive(s) are hooked up. Right now, the jumper is sitting on pins 2 and 3. You want to temporarily pull the plastic jumper off of pins 2 and 3 and place it on pins 1 and 2. Leave it on there for about a minute.
(leaving the power off). After about a minute, put the jumper connector back on to pins 2 and 3. Now, turn the power on and boot up. See if it boots.

What you are doing by moving this jumper is clearing the bios and resetting it to it's defaults. This may or may not work for you.

One other thing to do while you have the power off is to GENTLY put a little thumb pressure on the centipede-looking-rectangular chip in the corner of the motherboard labeled Award. That's your actual bios chip. Give it a little light pressure evenly on the chip to make sure it's snug in the motherboard. Do the same with your memory sticks...just make sure everything is "seated" well in the motherboard while you have the case off, but DON'T PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THESE THINGS.

If your bootup isn't even getting to the memory check, then there's no way to flash it.
