Boot Question: Hard Drives...

When you boot your system up do ALL the harddrives spin up as well at the same time? I only have 1 HD so I cant tell 🙁

Regards

All of my SCSI drives get their "wakeup" call from the SCSI card, so yes, they all spinup at the same time.

Yes they do.

However, different models take different times to spin up - so you may actually hear them at different times

i think that they do spin up, but after a few minutes will be turned off.

I say this because i hear my HD long before i see the ide drives in the boot up process.

When you start your computer, every single hard drive connected via an IDE or SCSI channel will spin up. I don't know about external drives, but let's not worry about that.

If you have set your hard drives to turn off after x minutes of inactivity, then after x minutes have passed, those drives that have not been accessed at all will spin down.

That is all.

What happens if they are not included in your boot sequence?
Do they still spin up?

Say your boot seq is somthing like "CDROM, A, C" but you also have HDs that are E and F drives. They all spin up when the system is powered on because they have to be detected by the BIOS and have to be check for/by SMART. Now if we continue into windows and then never touch E and F they will spin down based on BIOS or Windows Power Saving settings (unless set to 'Never shut off').
