Boot problems

I have problem whena I but my computer. It may be connected to my Maxtor hard drive and Epox mother board. When I turn my Computer somtimes during IDE verification it make 2 short beeps and stay freez for about 40 seconds. After that comp continues booting without hard disk and crashes. After I restart it several times it works normaly. Can anyone tell me what is wrong

First of all I would like to suggest that you don't head butt your computer.
Seriously, though, the first thing that I would do is make sure that the IDE check is not a RAID check. If you have onboard RAID disable it.
Second I would consider getting a new IDE cable.
Third, I would let it detect your hard drive once and then make it stick in bios. Set all devices that don't exist to none instead of auto.
Fourth I would make sure that S.M.A.R.T. is enabled so that it checks the HDD for physical defects. If it is currently enabled, disable it
Fifth I would use the maxblast software and allow it to run a diagnostic. It is very thorough.
If all else fails an updated bios might be a good idea. Do the simple things too like making sure everything is seated correctly and undamaged.
