Ok, i just built a new computer, i have everything working and i inserted the win2k boot disk to install windows 2000. But some file was missing so I decided to install win98 using the the win98 boot disk. I got to the point where there is a prompt but i dont know what to do from here. Can someone help me??

I tried installing win2k and win98se from the Cd-rom instead of a bootdisk because i do not know DOS, I pointed my bios to cdrom as boot drive #1 but it said "missing operating system"

absolutely. Here's what you do:

Reboot your computer with the Win98 disk.

Make sure to start it with CD-Rom support of course

When you come to the prompt, type "SETUP" without quotes.

From there Windows will read your HD for errors and following that will be prepared to install Windows98.

Windows2000 is a whole different ballgame and I still refuse to use it, so I can't help you there. My apologies!

Hope this helps you out Bud!

well, if you just booted off a disk and wish to install win98, put your win98 cd rom in the cd drive

assuming here that your cd-rom is your D: drive, you type

d:
cd win98
setup

this will run setup off the cd-rom. probably the easiest way to do this. you could also copy the contents of your win98 dir on your cd over to your hard drive and run setup from there, but that gets a little more complicated

i tried that but it keeps freezing or something
I tried typing in setup at prompt but didnt get anywhere

it starts to read the Cd-rom for couple seconds with the message "checking registry"
then another message pops up saying it needs XXXXXXX (some number)

then it doesnt go anywhere from there, whats wrong???
or does it take a very long time for that process?

<< it needs XXXXXXX (some number) >>

can only think its asking for the product key which you get with your copy of windows!

That should be:

d:\ (or whatever your cd drive is)
cd\ win98
setup

Type that at the dos prompt and you should be fine.

You don't need the registration number until much futher along.

OK, I just finished troubleshooting a friend's 'puter last Thrusday and the same problem occurs. As soon as I type setup on the E:\Win98 dos prompt, the system hangs! Finally, I was able to isolate the problem with the PSU. His PSU cannot support a TB 1.1Ghz. Switched the CPU with a D-900 and everything went well. So check your system and make sure you have enough juice to the CPU. If you do, make sure you change to the right directory of your CD-Rom. When you boot to the boot disk with CD Rom support, a RAMDrive is created which will take the drive lette D:\ and your CD-Rom E:\. This is if you only have one HDD and one partition.😎
