Boot Problem w/Mandrake 8.2

I have a dual boot on my system: WinXP Pro and Mandrake 8.2. Yesterday, while in Windows, I was testing different overclocking scenarios for the FSB and video card. This resulted in several lock-ups and memory dumps.

Having scratched that itch, I reset everything to default and proceeded on my merry way. Or so I thought.

As it turns out, Windows boots up without a problem but I can't get in to Linux. After several attempts, I can get it to a point where I'm offered an option to "force a file system integrity check /dev/hda8:"

If I choose "yes" I soon get a message that the integrity check failed. I'm given an option to repair the errors. Again, I choose "yes" and soon arrive at the prompt, localhost login:

If I type my name and password I get an error message that the "Authentication host cannot retrieve authentication info."

When this has happened in the past I've always resorted to re-installing Mandrake. I don't want to do that though if there is any way to correct the error. (I don't want to have to redo all my downloads, get eveything set up the way I like it, etc.) Do I have any alternatives?

Making progress.

I booted up with the first install CD. After using the rescue prompt I went to the console and typed e2fsck -py /dev/hda8. That apparently repaired the file system.

Now I can boot up to the login prompt. If I type in my user account info (name and password) I get:

[dan@localhost dan]$

If I type in root and the password I get:

[root@localhost root]#

What command do I use at that point to get to my KDE desktop?

Thans for the suggestion. When I type startx I get "fatal server error: no screen found." :|

/usr/X11/bin/XF86cfg maybe. The capitalization may be off, it could be something like /usr/X11/xf86cfg.
