this has probably been answered a million times,,,,,, i have forever had trouble reintalls,,,, with no original disk,,,, can you copy a hard drive for backup reasons, and then if the original went out,,, can you use the copy to make or use as an operating system on a new ineternal hdd,,,, or does MS want more than that,,,, i have trouble with reinstalls,,, how do you copy your os and use it later/????
 
Sure, there are ways to clone/backup whole operating systems. The Professional/Business editions of Vista and Win7 can make complete backups, products like Windows Home Server can make complete backups, and 3rd party products like Acronis True Image can make an image that can later be restored. These are all intended to be backups to be restored to a hard drive though; the backups in and of themselves aren't bootable, as they're usually compressed.
