boot lockup on an hp

I have an HP and I just added a new hard drive to the machine. However, after adding the new hard drive, when POSTing, the screen locks up when it has reached the newly installed hard drive. When I disconnect the new hard drive, it works fine, and the hard drive works fine on other computers I've tested it on.
Also, when the Windows booting screen comes up (the one where the thing scrolls) and I plug my new hard drive in, Windows can detect it fine and I can read and write to it. I'm not sure what's causing the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your time

We'll need a little more info to have any ideas.

Give the model # of the HP and what OS with SP level. We can find out if it's a desktop/notebook and what chipset and so on from that.

What is the make/model of the add on drive. We can find out if it's internal/external, sata/pata.

Did you say you plugged in the drive while windows is loading? That's generally not done unless it's an external (esata, firewire, or USB) drive. If that's the case perhaps your boot order in bios is set to boot from removable (the new drive) devices first. It's also possible that the drive uses too much current during boot time to allow the usb system to be properly detected. Without more info these are sort of wild guesses.

Ok, I'm not currently at a place to give exact numbers, but the HP is a pavilion a520n with windows XP SP2, desktop,
Samsung spinpoint, not sure the exact model number, but i believe it's 7200 RPM 160 GB, internal PATA

yes, I plugged in the drive when Windows was loading, and I know it's not usually done, but I checked bios and it was boot from my primary master IDE, which is the old drive with my windows partition on it.

if you need any more information, feel free to post.
