Boot laptop with ext. usb drive

I have an IBM thinkpad T40 that I would like to boot from an external hard drive (western digital 40Gb) in a USB 2.0 enclosure from Bytecc.

The hard drive is currently new and formatted with NTFS as the file system.

When I insert the Win XP installation CD into the thinkpad and boot from the CD expecting to install it to the external drive, the windows setup procedure does show the disk as seen and recognizes the appropriate capacity but cannot install to it.

I would much appreciate help in this matter.

Thank you

I'm not so sure you can do that.

Anyone else know? I know with some drives you need specific drivers and what not loaded.
