Boot hangs at desktop

My parents computer is having this problem where it will hang at the desktop after any user logs in. After longing in, it will hang at the desktop for around 2-3 minutes before the start menu and icons appear. I've tried everything I can think of. Whats weird is if I go to msconfig and uncheck Load System Services under Selective Startup I won't get the hang. This is a relatively new install. I've been disabling services for the last hour but I can't get the one thats broken. Any ideas?

Let me add somethings: It's running SP2 and also is running file and printer sharing. I've disabled file and printer sharing but it did not fix it. Also, while it is hanging I can move my mouse around with no lag and if I hit control alt del the task manager will pop up almost instantly. There is no process that is using the cpu. If I get close to the computer and listen for hard drive reads/writes I can't hear anything from the drive so I am guessing It is not being used.

If you haven't done so already I'd defrag the hd and if you have any utilities also defrag the registry. It sounds like it's spending a lot of time hunting files. Also make sure that all of the drivers are the most current available for the system. You might also consider updating the firmware on the mb and drives if available. I've also seen a system hang like that when one of the ide drives was going bad.
