ok im making a music server that is totaly silent( for my room) so i can listen to music in bed...now it's gonne be quiet but im worried abotu the hdd noise, i know seagates and new maxtors are quiet but my dad mentioned a "boot from lan" thing.... i have a gigabyte AX Ver. 5.2 mobo( yes old) and no lan onboard, so does any one know these 3 things

1) would the machine that is setup as the"server" that it boots from take a major performence hit even when it's just idling????

2) do i need a special card to do this and if so what should i look for( EG. advertised boot from lan or some wierd code thing)

3)any one know a site that describes boot from lan in depth, im not sure i 100% get it...thanks

thanks

I think boot from lan is used for recovery, not for everyday usage.

Depends. AFAIK Windows can't boot and run from LAN, but most unixes can. It's not very difficult to boot from the network and mount the root filesystem via NFS and run without a hard disk at all. Most of my Linux installs are done by booting from the network and installing the packages from the Internet, you just need hardware that supports the network booting.

Ditto for SUN Microsystems and Solaris. When I worked in tech support, we had to build dozens of workstations at a time and we'd do it with a network boot that connected to a server running their "Jumpstart" software, which would run the Solaris installer over the network. Gives a cleaner installation than ghosting for them, and you don't have to have anything installed locally to do it.

OK! The guy booted from Linux. Now he wants to listen to his music without the Noise of the Hard Drive.

So, what Linux can offer as a next step???

Play the music over the network as well? You need to have storage somewhere, flash memory is too expensive so you need a regular hard disk somewhere.

You can play music over a network. Just have the MP3s or whatever stored on an HD in a comp in a different room.

i am getting a segate 40 GBer and i figure their idle noise is totaly silent and when im listening to music(when it has to read stuff off the harddrive) it wont matter since the music will be louder, im just running it 24/7 so i want to be able to sleep at night :) if i were to do this bot from lan thing i would need linux on the "server"...correct??? also would the "server" be really slow( the server would prolly be my computer so i dont want it to be shitty...i like my cfomputer just the way it is :) )thanks!!!

BTW idealy( if possilbe) i would have no harddrive and 2 fans( 1 if i can) one on psu and one on cpu( i might mod psu to be passive) so i would be playing mp3's/wma's thru network too if it was a perfect setup...

Just configure power management for the drive so it's turned off after some time and you can sleep w/o any noise...
I would recommed linux for that box, but windows should work fine too.

It's easier to customize and manage remotely and requires a lower resource profile.
