boot failure because of burner?

yesterday i turned off my comp yesterday and went home. i returned to my dorm today to turn back on the comp and get in a bit of Ghost recon. unfortunately, it failed to boot becuase a file was missing. forgetting to write it down, i restarted again. next time, it just stuck on the screen with the win2000 logo. my hard drive light would just go on for 5 seconds then go out. i tried to boot from my win2k cd with my dvd; didn't work. i thought maybe i should limit the number of cd-rom drives, so i disconnected the ide cables for my cd-rom and burner. somehow, taht worked. later, i shut down my comp, plugged the drives back in, and the same problem. i disconnected, reinstalled win2k, but again it wouldnt' start up. if i unplug my lite-on 12x10x32 burner, it's fine. any ideas?
