Motherboard: ASUS A8N-E

Recently, I updated my motherboard's (Asus A8N-E) BIOS to the latest version (1013) from 1011 which I WAS using.. I did this through AsusUpdate for Windows (which I've used before with no problems). It downloaded, verified, flashed, etc. without any problems. It then requested a restart for system changes to take effect. During the bootup it then stops with the "BOOT DISK FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER." An ugly, scary message to say the least. Each time I press enter, the message just comes up again.

After repeated attempts with no luck, I looked in my Mobo manual and read that I can restore a corrupted BIOS (I assumed that's what had happened) with my support CD. So I threw that in and made sure my boot order was CD-ROM then Hard Drive. I'm pretty sure the manual said I should get a message saying "restoring BIOS" or something like that. Well, I don't get anything like that Actually I get some messages flashing up quickly, but as long as the CD is in the drive it will boot up normally into XP. However, if the CD is not in the drive I get the BOOT DISK FAILURE message again

Since this time, I have re-flashed the BIOS via awdflash (in DOS) to 1013 again, and then back to 1011 (where it is now). However, everytime I startup, I can't boot up from my Hard Disk UNLESS THE BOOT PRIORITY IS SET TO CD-ROM BEFORE HARD DRIVE AND MY ASUS CD IS IN THE CD-ROM DRIVE. My knowledge on this is kind of limited but it appears that somehow the "boot disk" information on my hard drive has been comprimised hence the computer won't recognize it as a bootable device. Because if I use the "boot disk" information from the Asus Support CD, the computer boots and then starts up XP without a problem (I'm using the computer right now so obviously the disk itself is fine).

Help!!

I can not tell you how to fix whatever it has broken in Windows (other than to either reinstall or try to do a repair to the O/S), but I will advise you that, IMO (and I know others will disagree with this), you should never attempt to update BIOS from within Windows. For ASUS you should use the keyboard function key (I think it is F4 or maybe ctrl + F4) at bootup to get into the BIOS flash utility and reflash your BIOS that way from a BIOS update diskette that you have created prior to going into the flash utililty. The instructions for doing this should be in your M/B users manual.

Good luck.

Yeah, never from within windows is correct. Why did you even bother flashing your bios in the first place?

Is your boot drive setup correctly in the bios?

Yeah, what he said ^ . When you flash the BIOS, it may revert to default settings, and may need its boot-device priority and hard-disk priority lists set up again. No biggie.

Shortcut: On an Asus A8N-E, you can press the F8 key when the system's POSTing and it'll bring up a blue mini-menu where you can pick the boot device you want it to use for this one boot. Pick your HDD and see if she's back on track. If so, you know your Windows installation is OK.

Ok..try this..Once you get into windows with the CD...Format a Floppy disk...from the root directory of your bootable partiion copy to the floppy the following files..boot.ini, ntldr & ntdetect.com. Restart the system without the cd in and have the floppy drive set as your first boot drive. Does it boot?
