boot dealy with network cable plugged in

Hi there,

I have a strange occurance during my XP bootup that I'd love to solve. About 1/2 way through the boot process my disk activity stops and the system seems to "wait" for about 20-40 seconds. I found that if I unplug my ethernet cable prior to booting up, this delay dissapears. I'm not a network guy and would appreciate any tips on how to solve this. I'm assuming it's looking for a connection or an address or something, but am unsure where to start. I'm on ADSL through PPOE.

depending on when it is happening, it might be waiting for an ip, or more likely it is looking for a network boot.

check your bios and make lan boot further down on the list of options.

I agree, I bet its waiting for DHCP. Can you try this with a USB cable to the modem if at all possible?

I think the DHCP thing sounds right. I remember someone mentioning that to me a while back. Is there a way for me to specify the DHCP? I believe the ISP supplied them to me with my username etc.

Would I have to specify DHCP for the PPOE connection or the Local Area Connection?

No, that won't help. The only thing I could see helping is getting a cheap router and testing it out with that.( see hot deals)

wow, its not that. try static ip see if that helps

once again look in your bios at the boot order.

Ok, cool I got it fixed. The IP for my "Local Area Connection" seemed static so I entered the info into TCP/IP and bang! boots about 30 seconds faster now. Thanks for the help!

That'll work great till the DHCP servers switch the IP address that it assigns for you, and your static IP settings screw up whoever gets your IP address next.

Yeah, its most likely looking for a network boot on bootup.

I strongly suggest changing the ip back to DHCP.

Get a $10 router and you can have the best of both.
